  • Simultaneous (or conference) interpreting is a mode of oral translation where an interpreter conveys spoken language into another language in real-time, as the speaker is talking. The interpreter listens through headphones and speaks into a microphone, often working in a soundproof booth and onsite to ensure clear communication. This method is commonly used in international conferences or high-profile meetings to enable smooth multilingual communication.

In this mode interpreters usually work in pairs (or teams of three) and must focus intensely, switching with a partner every 20–30 minutes to maintain accuracy and manage cognitive load.

  • Online or remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) is a form of interpreting where linguists provide their services from a separate location, relying on specialised platforms to facilitate the process. The interpreter listens to the speaker via audio or video feeds and delivers the interpretation through the platform, enabling participants in different locations and time zones to communicate seamlessly. RSI is widely used for virtual conferences, webinars and international online meetings, offering flexibility, lower cost and accessibility to multilingual interaction to a virtually unlimited audience.

  • Consecutive interpreting is a mode of oral translation where the interpreter waits for the speaker to finish a segment of speech, ranging from a few sentences to a few minutes of speaking, before translating it into the target language. The interpreter often takes notes while listening and then delivers the translation during the speaker's pause. This method is commonly used in diplomatic setting and is best suited for smaller meetings and negotiations.

  • Large international conferences are often multilingual, requiring the coordination of dozens of interpreters working onsite and remotely. To streamline the process and save you valuable time and effort, I can select, recruit and manage teams of interpreters, ensuring a stress-free experience for you.

  • The industry standard is for interpreters to work in pairs or teams of three, alternating with a partner every 20–30 minutes, from a soundproof booth to ensure accuracy and maintain concentration. Depending on the language combination, many interpreters are capable of working bidirectionally: interpreting from a foreign language into their native language and vice versa. For example, I interpret in all modes from English and French into Russian, as well as from Russian into English.

In situations where soundproof booths are not feasible or when the audience needs to move within a facility, interpreters use mobile equipment or tour guide systems, such as during factory visits or exhibition tours.

During negotiations or board meetings, interpreters typically work without equipment, using a fast and dynamic liaison mode, interpreting sentence by sentence as speakers take turns.

As part of my services package, I would be happy to advise you on the mode of interpreting best suited for your event as well as take care of the interpreting equipment, if required. You can safely delegate such technicalities to a professional.

For onsite assignments, interpreters typically charge a full-day fee, with professional rates in the EU often starting from €650. As a general rule, professional interpreters do not offer hourly rates for onsite work.

By contrast, rates for remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) may include hourly fees for very short assignments lasting just one hour. While RSI offers clients greater flexibility and a more granular pricing structure, the overall fee range remains comparable to that of onsite projects.
